Ed was born July 16, 1923 to Edward J and Opal (Conery) Schwartz in Maquoketa, Iowa. Ed grew up in Clinton (Lyons), Iowa and graduated from Clinton High School. During WWII, he served with the United States Army Air Corps where he was chosen for Cadet pilot training and was deployed in the Pacific Theater including a period at Okinawa. His introduction to aviation and military aircraft was a love that followed him all of his life.
Following military service he returned to Clinton where he was an avid motorcycle enthusiast and made many life long friends riding his Indian motorcycle throughout the Midwest. Ed went to work for the contractor building the new ALCOA plant in 1947 and then was hired on full time in 1949 by ALCOA as an electrician. He married Dorothy Frandsen in Clinton, Iowa on May 16, 1953.
Ed had a passion for his job at ALCOA. He demonstrated an incredible work ethic throughout his long career and truly was proud of his work. He spoke often of the people he worked with and thought of each as part of his extended family. He was recognized for many years of service as a safety committeeman. Ed retired in 2004 from the ALCOA plant, Riverdale, after 54 years of service as a master Electrician.
Throughout his working life, as well as into retirement, Ed continued to show a great passion for aviation. He was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) and often attended the Oshkosh Air Venture. Ed's most incredible gift of all was his love and dedication to providing a wonderful life for his family. He was a true patriot and loved his country.
Ed is survived by his wife, Dorothy, son, Robert Schwartz (Adriana) Davenport, daughter Luann Stemlar (Michael) Bettendorf, a granddaughter, Elizabeth Stemlar, Cedar Falls, Iowa, a brother, Will Schwartz, Davenport, an aunt, Charlotte Shollenberger, Eldridge, nieces, a nephew and RB.
