Vernon William Smart, 86, of Carrollton, died Saturday, August 20, 2011 at the Life Care Center of Carrollton.
He was born September 6, 1924 to Ernest and Mable (Grimes) Smart near Indian Grove. He married Betty Darleen Dent on November 30, 1947 at the Carrollton Christian Church Parsonage with Reverend Whitehouse performing the ceremony. She survives of the home.
After graduating from Carrollton High School, he joined the Army Air Force 513th Troop Carrier Command where he was trained as a pilot and his job was a Radio Operator Mechanic and Pistol Marksman. Most of his service time was spent in China. Mr. Smart worked for the Santa Fe Railroad, Montgomery Ward, Smith Supermarket, was a rural mail carrier for over 30 years, was an OATS bus driver and substitute driver, Carroll County Western Commissioner, Security Guard for the new Waverly Bridge as it was built, served on the Carroll County Senior Center Board of Directors, was an Emergency Medical Technician for three years in Carrollton, and was a T-Ball umpire.
He was a Church Deacon, Sunday School teacher, was approved as a State Royal Ambassadors Leader, used his vacation time to be a Church Camp Counselor, and was church treasurer for over 30 years. He also served as an Associational Moderator, Associational Treasurer, First Baptist Church Board Member selected to serve on the Associational Board, and a member of the State Baptist Board of Directors in Jefferson City. He was a lifetime member of Pence-Lovell england Post #1773, Carrollton, and the American Legion, Carrollton.
Other survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Sherry Kelb and Gary of Carrollton.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Homer Smart; two sisters, Jessie Lancaster and Edna Pippin.
Funeral Services will be held Thursday, August 25, at 1:30 p.m. at Bittiker Funeral Home with Reverend Bruce Trussell and Reverend Jeremy Payne officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery with Military services conducted by the Carrollton Pence-Lovell-England VFW Post #1773 of The Veterans of Foreign Wars.
