Bertha was born in Ridgehill Missouri. The Family moved to Arkansas before September 1898 before moving to Howe Oklahoma (Choctow Indian Nation) by 1905. Several extended family members are buried in the Howe Cemetery. After marrying John Vasser they lived in several places prior to Picher, Oklahoma where she had a restaurant. Picher was a lead & zinc mining town. In the early to mid 1930s she and her children left Picher because of the "mine riots" and settled in California. She finally ended up in San Jose owning several "skid row hotels" in and around downtown.
