Writer. She was an award-winning children's novelist as well as a writer of adult fiction. She studied journalism in college, at Brigham Young University and the University of Missouri, and graduated from BYU in 1934. While a BYU student, she married her first husband, Frederick Chester Sorensen, in 1933, who was then an English teacher at a local junior high and a PhD candidate at Stanford. They had two children. Her husband's subsequent career as a professor allowed her to live in California, Indiana, Colorado, Alabama and Pennsylvania. Her first novel was published in 1942. Most of her adult novels are based on her Mormon (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) background, although she left the Mormon church during her first marriage. Her first children's book was published in 1953. Her fourth book for children, "Miracles on Maple Hill," was awarded the 1957 Newbery Medal. Her marriage to Sorensen ended about 1959 and she married writer Alec Waugh about 1969. The Waughs resided in Morocco for 13 years and returned to live in the United States in 1980. Her last novel was published in 1978.
