John Marvin Tolsma was born on February 18, 1946 in Sibley, Iowa. He was the son of Minze (Marvin) and Gretrude (Baker) Tolsma. He lived his youth in Ocheyedan where he graduated from the Christian Grade School and attended Ocheyedan High School for two years.
John then served in the United States Navy,. He was assigned to the Mobile Construction Battalion Eight, from 1966 to 1968 and was honorably discharged. After the Navy, he worked various jobs.
He was united in marriage to Arlen Arends of Ellsworth, Minnesota on November 30, 1970 in Brandon, South Dakota. They lived in Ellsworth, Minnesota, where John worked for Johnson Well Company out of Bigelow, Minnesota. They moved to DeSmit, South Dakota, where John worked for Kaiser Well Company, until moving to rural Bigelow, Minnesota, where he returned to Johnson Well Company, working unitl 1977. They moved back to Ocheyedan, where John worked for Osterman Construction for 13 years. From 1991 to 2010, he worked for Zeverbergen Machine in Ocheyedan
John enjoyed his family, being outdoors and time at his shop and garden
He was baptized member of the Ocheyedan Christian Reformed Church, where he and Arlen attended. He was a member of the American Legion Post # 0326, Ocheyedan, Iowa and the V.F.W. #7373, Sibley
