Pioneer Resident of Santa Monica and Los Angeles, California. The son of William and Susan (Tarleton) Tomkinson of Cheshire, England, Captain Edward P. Tomkinson was an officer in the British Navy before coming to California around 1875. Husband of Frances Ethel Morgan, they married in Los Angeles in 1876. After her death in 1900 he married Grace Maynard in 1904. He reportedly helped to lay out and establish the first golf course in Los Angeles, which was located on the property of fellow Englishman Andrew Campbell-Johnston, in 1883, in the area now known as Highland Park. He was a charter member of the British Benevolent Society of Los Angeles in 1887, and an avid polo player.
