He enlisted in Company F, Michigan 12th Volunteer Infantry Regiment on 25 November 1861 at Jefferson Township, Cass County, Michigan for three years of service. His age was listed as 45 years. He was wounded (vulnus sclopetarium - gunshot) at the Battle of Shiloh (Hardin County, Tennessee) on 6 April 1862 and died of complications from that wounding in General Hospital no. 3 at Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana on 1 May 1862.

His wife 'Mary J. Preston' applied for pension on 22 June 1909 -- application # 922712 Michigan. They had one son, Walter Luman "Luman" Brown (1846-1927), who also served in the Civil War.
