Mrs. Jacob Underwood was born in Carter county, Tennessee, in 1835, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J.E. Martin, April 5, 1912, aged 76 years, 3 months and 29 days. She professed Christ when about 15 years old and united with the Cobbs Creek Baptist church in Johnson county, Tennessee.
She was united in marriage to Elbert S. Pierce, in 1852, and to this union three children were born, all dying in childhood. She and her husband saw thrilling times during the Civil War. Her husband losing his life as a Union soldier. She saw more than many of the enlisted soldiers and could talk for hours of her experiences.
She with a number of her relatives moved from East Tennessee to Indiana in 1865,and was one of the number who organized the Tennessee Valley Baptist church at the Staats school house by the Rev. McMasters.
She was united in marriage to Jacob Underwood, Feb. 16, 1873, and to this union two daughters and one son were born who survive her, together with numerous relatives and friends to mourn her death. She was pure in heart, a devoted christian, a faithful wife and a loving mother.
Funeral services were held Sunday morning at the Tennessee Valley church and burial followed at Pisgah cemetery where the body was laid to rest beside that of her husband.
