Dr. Robert L. Davies of Atlanta, GA, died January 13, 2012.

Dr. Davies was born July 2, 1939 in Somerset, KY to Nathan and Elizabeth Davies.

After graduating from high school in his home town, he attended the University of Louisville on a scholastic scholarship graduating with his BA in Chemistry in 1961. During his time studying there he was a standing member on the dean's list and Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. He graduated from the Louisville School of Medicine in 1965 with honors. Dr. Davies earned a special distinction for working his summer job as a life guard when he received a Presidential Citation from John F. Kennedy for saving a life. Dr. Davies completed his residency in radiology at Vanderbilt University in 1969 and earned his Board Certification in Radiology in 1970. Following his residency, he served in the US Army at Fort McPherson as head of the 3rd Army Hospital, attained the rank of Major, earning a medal of distinction for his service. During his time as an Atlanta resident, he was a respected and dedicated physician ñ devoting over 41 years to his work with Radiology Associates of DeKalb, and served on staff with DeKalb Medical Center until his passing. Over the past 40+ years, he has participated in over 20 medical associations, held multiple offices serving the medical community, of which a few include Vice President of the DeKalb Branch of the American Cancer Society and President-elect and Chairman of the Board of the DeKalb Medical Society. With so much time and effort devoted to his medical practice, Dr. Davies still managed to set aside time for his many personal interests that included travel, golf and snow skiing. Additionally, as he ran in five marathons over a three-year span, two of which were Boston Marathons. It must also be noted that Dr. Davies was widely recognized as a wine judge and enthusiast. He always made time for his family, friends, good wine and good food. Dr. Davies was predeceased by his first wife, Julia Davies.

He is survived by his wife, Suzanne Davies; daughters, Elizabeth Chiaffredo and Meredith Dieterle; stepdaughter, Catherine Gankofskie; stepson, Christopher Cochran; grandchild, Robert Lynn Chiaffredo; sister, Gwendolyn Brown; niece, Cassandra Walsh; and nephew, Charles Brown, III.

A funeral service will be held, Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at 12:00 p.m. at Peachtree Presbyterian Church in the main sanctuary. Private interment at Arlington Memorial Park for family only.
