She entered Nursing school after having worked for several years at Fairmont and Peralta hospitals. She was a pioneer in the endeavor as she became president of her nursing class in spite of the fact there were only a few black students in the class. She became a Licensed Vocational Nurse, (LVN), upon her graduation. She worked as an LVN for 34 years and touched many lives. She retired from working in the hospitals and worked part time doing in-home care.
She married her late husband Jesse Goods in 1959. They were married 39 years before his passing and shared many loving memories including spending quality time withe their grandchildren and son. She has been a progressive conscience in the community through her devotion to her family and participation in service organizations such as the National Council of Negro Women.
Sister Maudie Goods confessed and accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior at the age of 13 years old at St. Joe Baptist church in Kelly Louisiana where she was also baptized. From the time she had the unction to study and show herself approved. Sister Goods was not ashamed to share the gospel and apply it in her life. She joined Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church when she moved to New Orleans and served as a Sunday school teacher and member of the Baptist Training Union. Sister Goods has been a dedicated an active member of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church since she moved to Oakland in 1956. At Mount Zion she has taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and served on the Nurses Guild.
Sister Maudie Goods departed this live January 3, 2012. She is survived by her son: Dr. Henry Augustine Jr.; grandchildren: Yolanda, Kimberly and Angelina Augustine; a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends. She will be dearly missed.
