SNOWDEN: John Baptist Snowden was the appointed pastor for Leesburg-Mountain Gap Circuit 1876-77 and Middletown, 1872-73. Born May 14, 1801, he preached nearly 40 years (since age 23) before being admitted on trial in Washington MEC (Central Jurisdiction) in 1864 and being granted full connection in 1866 (date of ordination unknown). He was born into slavery May 14, 1801, in Morgans Run, Md.; and purchased his freedom at age 30. He preached under MEC appointment 15 years (1864-79), superannuated (retired) in 1879, and died in Maryland Sep. 8, 1885 (age 84). His other MEC appointments were Jefferson, Dallas Street (Baltimore), Linganore, Baltimore Circuit, Harford, Middletown (1872-73), Pine Grove, Govanstown, Hagerstown, and Leesburg-Mountain Gap. He is buried with his wife, Margaret Snowden (1809-70), his daughter, Mary E. E. Snowden Walker (1832-1903), and his son-in-law, Rev. Perry G. Walker (1832-1914), in Ellsworth Cemetery, Westminster, Md.
