As a teenager, Eleanor did clerical work at her father's church and it was there she met James Elwood, a drifter. She married him on February 18, 1898. By the time Eleanor was 25, she had five children, one who died young.
In 1906, Eleanor and James separated, and she moved with the children to Edendale, near Silverlake. Eleanor did laundry to bring in money. She listed herself as "widowed" in the city directory, even though James lived nearby and brought food to the family every week. The house she lived in was little more than a shack.
In 1916, Eleanor's widowed father moved into her home. He eventually settled in Tujunga and when he died in 1923, Eleanor moved into his house. By 1930, she had a second residence in Glendale, living there during the week.
Eleanor became very heavy in her middle age, and suffered from diabetes and hypertension. She died November 21, 1942 of congestive heart failure at the Los Angeles County General Hospital.
