Wallace Harding Allan, who worked at China Lake CA from 1945 to 1976, succumbed to complications of lung surgery on June 14, 2007. In retirement he was a resident of Beaverton, OR.

Wally, as he was known to his friends and collegues, graduated from University of California at Berkeley in 1944 with a degree in physics. He then worked at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory in Berkeley, CA on the Manhattan Project (the atomic bomb). In 1945, as the Manhattan Project was winding down, Wally accepted a position at the Naval Ordnance Test Station at China Lake, CA where he became an expert in ballistics and optics.

During his career at NOTS, Wally led the Thompson Ballistic Laboratory. He specialized in high-speed photography, and designed and built many high-speed cameras used in range instrumentation. His work in special photographic techniques for investigating the laminar flow of water around salmon and dolphins early in 1960s was recognized internationally.

Wally was born in Detroit, MI on March 6, 1921. He spent his earlty years in Southern California until his family moved north to Alameda, CA where he spent his formative years. In high school and at the university, he wan an expert marksman with small-bore rifles, earning both California and U. S. top honors.

In 1946 Wally married Lois Moore, who had arrived at NOTS earlier that year after graduating from Ohio State University.

The Allans' children, Thomas, Ann, Jonathan, and Wallace (Tad) grew up in China Lake. With Lois, all but Johnathan, who died in 2004, and their families survive him.

Thomas and his wife, Catherine reside in Medina, WA; their daughter Jeannette is a graduate student at the Monterey Institute for International Studies, and their son Marc is a student at Gonzaga University. Ann and Bruce Auld are Ridgecrest, CA residents after their recent retirement from careers in education. Their son, Bryan, assistant principal at Burroughs High School, his wife Jessica and three young children, Alyssa, Taylor and Connor, are also Ridgecrest residents. Their daughter Amy is an elementary school teacher and is married to Joe Hillygus, who recently entered the US Army's Warrant Officer Candidate School at Ft. Rucker, AL. Tad, his wife Diana and their son Tim live in Pacific Palisades, CA; their daugther Natalie, a recent graduate of Dartmouth College, is in San Francisco, CA and daughter Nicole is a Yale University student. Elizabeth, Jonathan's widow, and their son Jack and Elizabeth's daughter Sarah Jane live in Lake Oswego, OR. Two adult children from Jonathan's first marriage, Emily of Costa Mesa and Evan of Beaverton, OR also survive.
