FORMER ASPENITE DIES AT AGE 71 IN CALIFORNIA

Robert Smith Killey, 71, a resident of Aspen for 56 years and former Pitkin County treasurer, died at his home in Santa Monica, Calif., on Thursday, May 14, following a long illness. Mr. Killey came to Aspen at the age of two with his parents, and remained until he moved to Denver in 1945 where he owned and operated the Hart's Corner Drug Store for seven years. He moved to Santa Monica six years ago. He was born Aug. 10, 1887, at Laxey, on the Isle of Man, British Isles. He attended Aspen schools and later the Highland Park Pharmaceutical College. His first wife, the former Effie Light, died in 1930. In 1941, he married the former Edith Light [Effie's sister]. He was a member of the Methodist Church, the Elks, Masonic, and Eastern Star Lodges of Aspen; El Jebel Shrine Temple in Denver, and Consistory 1, Knights Templar, in Grand Junction. Surviving are his wife; three brothers, John, William and Thomas Killey, all of Denver; and three sisters, Miss Rebecca Killey and Mrs. J. R. (Emma) Cowell, both of Denver, and Mrs. Margaret Hopkins of Glenwood Springs. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 18, at Farnum Chapel in Glenwood Springs. The Aspen Masonic Lodge conducted graveside services in Red Butte Cemetery in Aspen.

Mr. and Mrs. Killey spent two weeks in Denver on business before their visit at the light ranch. They will return to their Santa Monica home this week. Mr. Killey was Pitkin County treasurer for 25 years and later owned a drug store in West Denver before retiring and moving to California.
