JAMES, Evelyn Fishburn Shackelford, the last of her generation of a prominent, early Roanoke family, died Monday, December 15, 1997. (She was born March 6, 1898.) She was a daughter of Grace Parker and Junius Blair Fishburn, Roanoke banker, newspaper owner and benefactor.
A graduate of Hollins College, she had been president of the school's Alumnae Association and a Hollins trustee. She had been president of the Roanoke branch of the Children's Home Society, the Junior League of Roanoke Valley and St. John's Episcopal Church Auxiliary board. She had served on the boards of Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke Fine Arts Center, the Community Concert Association and Virginia Music Festival. She once was assistant treasurer of Times-World Corporation. At Hollins, she was joint chairman of a major multi-million dollar fund-raising program in the 1960's and she received the Hollins Medal and the Algernon Sidney Sullivan Award.
She married George Scott Shackelford Jr., a Roanoke lawyer, and after his death, Willard Newbill James, vice president and treasurer of Hollins College. Surviving are a son, G. Scott Shackelford III, Roanoke; a daughter, Parker Crosland, Charlotte, N.C.; and five grandchildren.
