His fishing buddy was Don Canham, former Athletic Director of the University of Michigan. He had been also a close friend of Bo Shembechler, who he vistied in 1990, religiously every couple of days in the hospital after an near fatal heart attack. When his son played for Michigan, he bacame friends with him, and Bo came to his funeral in 1991. He would of been very modest about his friendship with Bo and claim he knew him and not too well. That was the type of man he was.
