Emma Nightingale, daughter of Thomas & Hannah Nightingale, was born at Rome, N.Y., Feb. 14, 1847, and died March 19, 1922, at the home of her sister, Mrs. J. C. Patten of Springville, Iowa. She moved with her parents from New York to Wisconsin in 1852 and was married to George W. Brewer in Clinton, Wi., April 20, 1870, and she and her husband moved to Linn County, Iowa, in the same year, making the journey in the old ‘Prairie Schooner'. There were born to this union eight children, six of whom still survive her. Her life has been one of toil and privation. Soon after her marriage, she and her husband moved from Linn County, Iowa, to Nebraska, the move being made in covered wagons, where their crops were completely destroyed by grasshoppers. They then returned to Linn County and after a few years of hard work moved to Milford, Iowa, where her husband died a few years later, on July 5, 1890, his death being caused by wounds received in the Civil War and from which he never fully recovered. Keeping her family together, she returned to Linn County where she purchased the farm which has since, with the exception of the past few years, been her home in which she has entirely paid for with her own labor, never having received her pension until the home had been fully paid for. She joined the Methodist Church in Allens Grove, Wi. and was a constant member until her death. She leaves to mourn her death her six children, O. C. Brewer of Central City, Iowa, Walter E. of Alburnette, Iowa, and Mrs. Alice Rogers of Woonsocket, S.D., Tom Brewer of Floyd, Iowa, Mrs. Lula Andrews of Jordans Grove, Iowa, and John Brewer of Urbana, Iowa, two sisters, Mrs. Alice Stark of Drumheller, Canada, and Mrs. J. C. Patten of Springville, Iowa, 20 grandchildren and one great- grandchild. Funeral services were held at the M.E. Church, Wed., March 22, at 10:30 a.m., Rev. D. B. Hanscomb officiating. Burial took place in Mt. Clark Cemetery.
