Maude A. Heckman, 94, of Locust Grove Retirement Village, HC-67, Mifflin, and formerly of RR 2, Port Royal, died at 4:25 p.m. Monday, April 4, 2005, at the village. She was born Nov. 24, 1910, in Cocolamus, a daughter of the late William I. and Mary Alice (Smith) Leister. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Russell E. Wagner, in 1955. Her second husband, Banks L. Heckman, preceded her in death in 1993. Surviving are: a daughter, Joy (Wagner) Houtz McLaughlin and husband Samuel, RR 2, Port Royal; a son, Willard R. "Woody" Wagner, RR 3, Port Royal; a sister, Dorothy (Leister) Arnold, Brookline Retirement Village; a grandson, Scott D. Houtz and wife Linda, HC-63, Mifflintown; two great-grandchildren, Selena (Houtz) Borhman and husband Lew, RR 3, Mifflintown, and Daniel S. Houtz, State College; and a great-great granddaughter, Taylor Borhman. She was preceded in death by three brothers, the Rev. Maurice Leister, Lehman Leister and Jeremiah (Jerry) Leister; and a sister, Esther (Leister) Tennis. Mrs. Heckman was a 1929 graduate of Fayette High School, McAlisterville. A longtime resident of Mifflin, she and her first husband, Russell, owned and operated Russ Wagner's Grocery on Main Street. After his death at age 55, Maude became sole proprietor. Following her marriage to Banks Heckman, she moved to Colonial Park and was employed as a clerk at the Kline Village 5 & 10. She was skilled in needlework and similar hobbies. She was a talented pianist and singer. She enjoyed teaching children, and while living in Mifflin, she taught Sunday and Bible school at the local church, where she sang in the choir and played piano for children. Her church, family and faith were always priorities. At the time of her death, she was a member of the Lower Tuscarora Presbyterian Church, Academia. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the McAlisterville Chapel of Brown Funeral Homes Inc., 16 Westfall St., McAlisterville, with the Rev. Theodore Janke officiating. Interment will follow in Lost Creek Mennonite Cemetery, Oakland Mills. The family will be present from 1 p.m. until time of service Thursday at the funeral home. The family will provide all flowers and asks that memorial contributions be made to: Lower Tuscarora Presbyterian Church, c/o Steve Beers, Treasurer, RR 2, Box 1088, Port Royal, PA 17082; or to a church or charity of one's choice.
