Judge Beverly Thomas Fitzpatrick, Sr., 80, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, September 16, 2000. A native of Roanoke, he graduated from Jefferson High School and received his Academic and Law degrees from Washington & Lee University. He was an officer in the United States Navy, serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific during World War II. He served as Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney of the City of Roanoke for five years and served as Chief Judge of the Twenty-Third General District Court for twenty-six years. He was President of both the Association of County and Municipal Judges of Virginia and the General District Courts' Judicial Conference of Virginia. He served on many local and state boards, and most recently was appointed President of the Jefferson Center Foundation, which is responsible for the restoration of Jefferson High School. He was elected "Father of the Year for Religious Activities" in 1963 by the Chamber of Commerce. He received the "Distinguished Citizen Award" in 1974 from the Roanoke Jaycees. He was a Ruling Elder at Second Presbyterian Church and taught Sunday School there for twenty-two years. The Multiple Sclerosis Society awarded him and his wife the Silver Hope Award in 1996 for outstanding community service. His proudest accomplishment was the Honor Court for Alcoholics, which he began and held each Thursday night for thirteen years.
