Mrs. Vera Mae Bishop Byrd, born May 8, 1931 in Laurel, died Monday, May 20, 2013 at Laurelwood Community Living Center in Laurel.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 25, 2013 at Memory Chapel with burial to follow at Hickory Grove Cemetery. Dr. Randy Turner and Rev. Allen Hill will officiate.
Mrs. Byrd was a member of First Baptist Church Laurel where she was a member of the church choir and achieved thirty-one years perfect attendance in Sunday school. She was also a member of Eastern Star # 24 and was retired from the Mississippi Highway Department.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Orville Byrd; parents, James E. Bishop and Vallie V. Bishop; brother, R. D. Bishop; and sisters, Iva V. Keown and Zera M. Westmoreland.
Survivors include her sister, Eva Rae Shaw; brother-in-law, Tennie Byrd (Gay) of Wiggins; nephews, Ronnie Dale Bishop (Alessa) of Louin, James C. Westmoreland of Ridgeland and Edward L. Westmoreland of Meridian; nieces, Jeanette Smith (Jim) of Atlanta, GA, Bettie Round of Mobile, AL, Nell Smith (Bill) of Gulfport, Cherree Cospelich (Tony) of Wiggins, Sherry Shaw Coats (Alan) of The Woodlands, TX and Angela L. Houston (Jimmy) of Laurel; great nephews, Morgan Bishop (Joan), Adam Bishop, Kylan Coats, Koby Coats (Cassandra), Kolton Coats, Caleb Houston (Rebecca), Seth Houston and Sam Houston; great nieces, Laura Bishop Richards (Ron), Holly Houston, Anna Beth Houston, Faith Houston and Hope Houston; and caregivers, Shirley Sutton, Josie McDonald and Carman Currie.
Pallbearers will be Ronnie Dale Bishop, Morgan D. Bishop, Jimmy Houston, Seth Houston and Eddie Westmoreland. Honorary pallbearers will be Warren Rayburn, Johnny Hassell and Ralph Simmons.
In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution in memory of Mrs. Byrd to either First Baptist Church, P. O. Box 2636, Laurel, MS 39441 or Community Hospice, Inc., 6242 Hwy 98, Suite 60, Hattiesburg, MS 39402.
Visitation will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. Friday, May 24, 2013 at Memory Chapel which is in charge of the arrangements.
