Conrad Culli Klee 1881-1962 graduated Binghamton H.S. 1899 and began work at First National Bank (later merged w City National Bank). He was a Note Teller in 1903 when Erastus C. Delavan 1852-1907 General Agent for The Travelers Indemnity Co. of Hartford Conn. took note of Klee's professionalism and drive and hired him out from the bank and groomed him to take over Mr. Delavan's business and position w The Travelers. Ersstus C. Delavan had negotiated a very sweet and lucrative deal w The Travelers whereby as their General Agent he received a two
percent commission on any policy sold in The Southern Tier of New York State and N.E. Pennsylvania no matter who sold the policy. Delavan made sure that this arrangement passed on to C. C. Klee. 1907 Erastus C. Delavan died and Conrad C. Klee took over his insurance business and began receiving the 2% commission income arrangement made by Delavan Also in 1907 Conrad C. Klee married Virginia Pearl Delavan 1879-1966 Erastus C. Delavan's niece who worked in the insurance office as a secretary.
Eventually Klee is made General Agent in Binghamton for The Travelers he was a Cracker Jack salesman and accumulated great wealth. He was one of the original investors of a new local company named I.B.M. Conrad Klee and Thomas J. Watson we're on a first name basis. He was extremely benevolent, kind and charitable w large donations to Trinity Memorial Episcopal Church and Tabernacle Methodist Church, Binghamton. He was also largely responsible for the rebuilding of The Episcopal Church of Guilford, N.Y. following a fire in 1930's
He was always generous to the Binghamton Boys Club. In the 1950's Conrad and Virginia Klee established their charitable foundation for educational grants to deserving college students and charitable causes in Broome & Chenango Counties. Their wills provided lifetime trusts for nieces and nephews their surviving spouses in many instances and grand nieces and grand nephews and a few great grand nieces and nephews as well as employees of The C.C. Klee Insurance Agency, friends, nurses and servants. Upon those recipients deaths their trust money reverted back to the Foundation. All trust recipients have died and today the Foundation is around $18 million.
The Klees were extremely generous w family members Mr. Klee sent checks ea month to his three older sisters. He footed the bill for most nieces and nephews secondary educations.
