He was a resident of Richmond when he enlisted there with the Virginia Artillery on 12 January 1861. He was 20 years old. He fought the whole war, never being wounded or captured. He surrendered at Danville on 1 May 1865. After the war, he moved to New York City and was a grain merchant for Rogers and Pendleton. He married Sallie Pendleton in 1864.
