WILLIAM C. HERWICK, ASPEN PIONEER, LAID AT REST

William C. Herwick, 65, passed away in his sleep October 16th at his home here in Aspen. Mr. Herwick had been in poor health the past year. He had been a resident of Aspen for 34 years but came to this section while yet a small boy. He is survived by his wife, Jennie, one daughter Mrs. Ruby Bandy, and two sons, Lorain R. and Frank S. and three grandchildren, all of Aspen. Funeral services, as The Times goes to press, are incomplete, awaiting word from relatives. Pallbearers are to be Harry Holms, John Stapleton, Harold Dwyer, William Stapleton, Ludwig Skiff, and Ray Hendricks.

OBITUARY

William C. Herwick was born in Jackson County, Kansas on June 5, 1879. He came to Colorado with his parents and an older sister when he was a year old. They came from Kansas in a covered wagon as far as what is now Salida. From there they packed the two children on a donkey, one in a lidless trunk, and the other in a boot box. Their mother led the donkey while the father drove the team and wagon. They traveled down the Eagle River and settled on a ranch now called Avon. He grew to manhood there and followed the life of a cowboy and rancher until he was 28 years old. On October 31, 1907, he and Jennie Stewart were married at Glenwood Springs, Colo. They moved to Meredith and lived there two years. To this union was born three children, a son, Stanley, in Meredith, and a son, Lorain and a daughter Ruby in Aspen where they moved and have lived until his passing.
