Macedonian Statesman. He was the first democratically elected President of the Republic of Macedonia, serving from 1991 to 1999. Born in present-day Serbia, Gligorov graduated from the Belgrade School of Law. He served in a number of government cabinet posts in the former Yugoslavian Republic, including Finance Secretary. During his presidency, Macedonia declared its independence from Yugoslavia (September 8, 1991). Gligorov was critically injured in a car bombing assassination attempt in October 1995, which left him permanently blinded in one eye. As a man of humble origins he declined a lavish state funeral, choosing instead to be buried in a private ceremony attended only by close family and friends.
