Dorothy Evelyn Ray Johnson, 88, McAlester, died Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2011, at McAlester Regional Health Center. She was born June 10, 1923, in Eufaula, to George and Rosie Casey Ray. She was raised in and around the Alma, Ark., area and attended school there. She came to McAlester in 1940, where she met her future husband, Lester Johnson, and they were married October 16, 1941. They lived in Oklahoma, Texas, Virginia and New York before he was deployed to Europe during World War II. After the war, they made their home in McAlester and Krebs. She worked in retail in McAlester for many years, retiring from S and H Green Stamps. She was a long time member of the McAlester First Baptist Church. She enjoyed her friends, family and home. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Rose Ann and John Hicks, of Collierville, Tenn.; a sister, Pauline Overstreet, of Van Buren, Ark.; two brothers, Howard Ray, of Ozark, Ark., Earl Ray, of Mountain Berg, Ark.; a sister-in-law, Deloras Johnson, of McAlester. And, three grandsons, Dennis Johnson, of Los Angeles, Calif., Robin Scott Johnson, of Tempe, Ariz., Brian Hicks, of Collierville, Tenn.; one granddaughter, Julia Carpenter, of Seattle, Wash.; four great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lester Johnson; two sons, Robert L. Johnson and David Johnson; a granddaughter, Amy Johnson; two brothers, Garland Ray and James Ray, and a sister, Mary Ann Ray. Pallbearers include Brian Hicks, Dennis Johnson, Robin Scott Johnson, Daivd Black, David Giacomo and Art Smith. Honorary pallbearers include the members of the First Bapist Church Adult Men's Sunday Class. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Bishop Chapel of Memories with the Rev. Steve Dennis officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery, McAlester, under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service.
