ROSE HILL, Va. - Gary Lynn Montgomery, 40, passed away Sunday (May 8, 2005) in Summerville, S.C.
Gary was born Aug. 14, 1964 in Middlesboro, Ky. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hatfield of Ewing, Va., and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Montgomery of Knoxville.
After graduating from Thomas Walker High School, Gary enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he proudly served his country for 16 years. He served aboard the USS Daniel Boone, the USS James K. Polk, the USS Francis Scott Key and the USS L. Mendel Rivers. He was also a corrections officer at the Navy Consolidated Brig in Charleston and an instructor at Trident Training Facility in Kings Bay, Ga. After retirement in 1998, he joined the trucking industry. He was a P and D driver for Averitt.
Gary was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to fish, hunt and "go camping with the boys." He was a wonderful husband and a loving father to his children, Gary Allen and Lauren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Jeff Montgomery.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Demi of Summerville, S.C.; two sons, Gary Allen and Lauren Brooke Montgomery of North Charleston; one sister, Lisa Ramsey of Ewing, Va.; one brother, Derek Hatfield of Ewing, Va.; 11 nieces and nephews; and many loving friends.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in the Arney-Mullins Funeral Home in Rose Hill, Va.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Rose Hill Pentecostal Church with the Rev. Jay Harold Smith and the Rev. Doug Hensley officiating.
Burial with military rites will be performed by the VFW Post No. 3382 of Kingsport.
