Anna married John in Hanover County, Virginia on 13 Maya 1852.

On Thursday, 13th inst., by the Rev. Wm. Norwood, JOHN R. CLAIBORNE, of Richmond, to ANNA VIRGINIA BASSETT, daughter of George W. Bassett, of Hanover county."

They were parents to Herbert Washington (b. 1853), Delia Hayes (b. 1854), Burnet Lewis (b. 1856), Delia Hayes (b. 1857), Virginia Bassett (b. 1858), and Landon Carter (b. 1862).

The second Delia married former Confederate general Simon Bolivar Buckner in 1885, and later was First Lady of Kentucky after his election as Governor. Their son Simon Jr. (Anna's grandson) was the highest-ranking American officer killed in World War Two.
