Arthur Carl Schmid, age 90, of Verona, died peacefully and surrounded by his loving family, on Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010, at St. Mary's Health Care Center.

He was born Sept. 13, 1920, in Eau Claire, third child of Adolph and Freida (Wittwer) Schmid. The family moved to the Schmid family farm in the Town of Verona in 1920. Arthur enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served on the Pacific Front in World War II as a gunner on the Billy Mitchell B25 Bombers from Aug. 28, 1942, until Sept. 13, 1945. After three years in the service and flying 67 missions, he was honorably discharged. During his formal check-out, the military wanted to check his hearing. He replied, "No. It's my birthday and I have a cold glass of beer waiting for me!"

He married his "honey bun" Gladys Gilgen on Feb. 19, 1955, in Iowa, and they enjoyed 55 years of marriage. Arthur was very proud of his Swiss Heritage. He could talk a story with anyone. He played a mean game of cards and enjoyed, with great pride, all of his grandchildren. He had a tremendous love of music, played 15 different instruments, and played in the Bill Schmid Band. He loved hunting, fishing, and travel, and the family enjoyed many vacations in Door County. He also established and managed Verona Women's Softball League. Arthur retired from Dairy Equipment Co. and was very proud of the 160 employees and projects he oversaw in his 25 years with them. He was a member of Salem United Church of Christ, the VFW Howard Schmid Post 8653 and of the American Legion.

Arthur is survived by his wife, Gladys of Verona; two sons, James (Ann) Schmid and their children, Christian, Samantha and Austin, Douglas (Michele) Schmid and their children, Justin and Jordan; a daughter, Teresa (Stephan) Mahlik and their daughter, McKenzie; granddogs, Bandit and Calli; a brother, Raymond (Dolores) Schmid; a sister, Pearl (Richard) Elver; a sister-in-law, Justine Schmid (Robert, deceased); and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Howard and Robert Schmid; and a sister, Evelyn Frederickson.
We love and will miss you dearly, brave man; your memory will live within us.
