Jack was born of September 6, 1918, in Reliance, SD, to William and Millie (Konz) Weiland.
He served in the United States Army during WWII, and was a member of the SD National Guard during the Korean War.
He graduated from Dakota Wesleyan University and the University of South Dakota with a Masters Degree in Political Science. He taught Social Studies at Forestburg, SD, High School prior to working for the Mitchell Publishing Company.
He later owned and operated an advertising specialty company, The House That Jack Built.
Jack was a very active member of the South Dakota Democratic Party serving as both the Assistant Chairman and State Chairman. He was a member of the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission and served as Farm Home Administrator. Jack was also the Democratic candidate in an unsuccessful bid for the United States Congress.
Jack is survived by four children, Jacquilyn (John) Etienne of Dubuque, IA, Judy (David) Wipf of Rapid City, Dr. Paul (Sandra) Weiland of Bath, NC, and James (Amy) Weiland of Oregon City, OR; surviving are five grandchildren, Heather (Eric) Howard, Rapid City, Jocelyn (Brent) Harseim, Campaign, IL, Joel Etienne, Norwalk, IA, Holly Wipf, Woodbury, MN, Julie Porcelli, Denver, CO; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Cecelia (Huffman) Weiland; and his parents.
Visitation will be Monday, January 16, 2012, at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City. Funeral services will be Tuesday, January 17, 2012, at Kirk Funeral Home with Pastor Brent Woodard officiating. Burial will follow at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard providing military honors. The family requests no flowers. Memorials may be given to Cornerstone Rescue Mission.
