HUGUES, tenth of the name, Lord DE LUSIGNAN, Count of La Marche & Angoulême, who made the trip to the Holy Land in the year 1218 & found himself at the capture of the city of Damietta, in 1219, with the Counts of Nevers, Bar-sur-Seine, & other Great Lords. Since then he was at war with King Saint Louis & Queen Blanche of Castile, & made his accommodation in the year 1230; attended the Assembly held at Melun, where he promised with the other Princes & Barons to strictly observe the Ordinance made against the Jews by the King in the month of March 1242; he divided, with the consent of his wife, his goods between his children, & gave to GUY, his second son, to enjoy after his death, Cognac, Merpins, Archiac with their depandances, &c. He took up arms a second time against Saint Louis, refusing to pay homage to Alphonse de France, Count of Poitiers; but the King having won a signal victory near Taillebourg over those of his party, on July 22, 1242, he was so surprised that the following month of August he came to find him in his camp in front of Pons, threw himself at his feet. & begged his pardon. He died in the year 1249, & was buried in the Abbey of Valence, near Couhe.
