Martha "Mattie" Critchfield was born in Lewis, Clay County, Indiana in 1847 to James Thomas (Scrutchfield) Critchfield and Pernetta "Pernetty" (Permette) White. She was the 8th of 11 children. Her brothers and sisters were: David, Esther Ann, Median (Mideon) (Madison), William, James, Marion (Martin) L., Crosby (Cansby), Sarah Jane, Lewis Van and Elzora Edith (Elizanne). She married Alexander Campbell "AC" Duggins in Sullivan County, Indiana on 07 Oct 1873. They had three sons: Louis Edward, William "Leonard" and John Medium. It is possible she passed away from complications during or after child birth due to a bleeding disorder.

No known grave exists for Martha. She was last recorded to be alive in the 1880 Census for Owen County, Kentucky. She was alive to give birth to her son in 1883. She disappears after that and her husband is found with a third wife about 1888. (A second wife died and another child was born in the interim.)
