Robert was born to Robert Cree and Janet Hamilton in County Down, Northern Ireland. He was in the Revolutionary War and served under Captain Gilbert McCoy's company of Cumberland County militia in 1779 and Captain William Crawford's company of Washington County in 1781. In 1786, Robert wed Elizabeth Villars, who was born in 1763 to John Villars and Victoria Muskelroy. They had:

1) Anne on 18 Nov 1788 (wed Isaac Haver)
2) Mary on 18 Nov 1788 (wed Thomas Morton)
3) Janet on 19 Jan 1790 (wed Robert Toppin)
4) Robert on 12 Apr 1791
5) George in 1792
