Joseph P. Storm was born January 30 1807, Botetourt County, Virginia. He was the son of Revolutionary War veteran John Storm and John Storm's second wife, Anne Parsons. Joseph was one of 15 children.

Before Joseph was six years old his parents moved from Virginia to what later became Greene County Indiana. The Storms were among the earliest white settlers in the area. Joseph's father made his living through farming as did most in the area.

On 19 Aug 1824 Joseph married Elizabeth Burch the daughter of a local preacher. Joseph was 17 and his wife was 22. They had their first child a year later. They had four children total:

Anna Storm 1830–
Nancy Jane Storm 1832–

Elizabeth died in Sept of 1834 at the age of 32.

By 2 Feb 1842 Joseph had moved to (or was at least passing through) Shelby County, Illinois, where he married his second wife Sarah Ann Herron. He was 35 at the time. They had one daughter:
Almira Storm 1846–1924

They later moved on to Linn County Iowa. Joseph died there on 20 Dec 1847. He was only about 40 years old. HIs estate was administered by Ambrose Parsons who was most likely a relative of Joseph's mother. After the payment of debts the majority of his estate went to Joseph's infant daughter, Almira Storm.
