Roman Catholic Bishop. Denver's first Catholic Bishop, he was consecrated Bishop of Denver on August 16, 1868. He became known as "the Apostle of Colorado" for his unceasing work for the Catholic Church. Mount Olivet Cemetery, in which he is buried, was part of a 440 acre farm purchased by Bishop Machebeuf and donated by him to the Church. A peak in Colorado near Loveland Pass is named in his honor.
