Inventor. While an employee at the Vacuum Oil Company (later Mobil Oil) , he discovered that the thick oil which was a by-product of his distilled kerosene was able to stand the high pressures and temperatures of the new internal combustion engine. Previously the oil had been used only by tanners, but when George Selden tried it in his gasoline automobile engine in 1877 he found it to be the perfect lubricant and it was henceforth known as motor oil.
