Rev. Herman J. Powell, 72, died at Santa Ana, California, Monday, following an illness of several months with cancer. Services will be held at Santa Ana, where the body will be cremated and at some later date, because of the present health of Mrs. Powell, the ashes will be brought to Ionia for interment in the family lot at Highland Park Cemetery.

Surviving are Mrs. Francis Powell, his widow, one sister, Mrs. Ella M. Barnes, and one brother, Herbert E. Powell, of Ionia, at whose home Mrs. Barnes is residing for the present.

Herman J. Powell was born in Ronald township on the farm of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph P. Powell. He attended the Ionia high school from which he was graduated in the early 1880's. He was graduated from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, and later took courses of study in theological seminaries at Chicago and in Massachusetts. He was a minister of the Baptist church and his first pastorate was at Spring Lake. He never resided in Ionia after leaving here for college, and following his pastorate at Spring Lake, was in charge of churches at Joliet, Illinois; Carlsbad, New Mexico, and in California. He remained active in the ministry until a few years ago when his health brought about his retirement and he has since resided on his orange ranch at Santa Anna.

His widow was formerly Miss Frances Lennox, of Saginaw. As a boy in school Mr. Powell became a member of the Ionia Baptist church.
