Pilot Killed

Official notification has been received by the Merritt Francies of East Wenatchee stating that Lt Col John J. Lynch, their son-in-law, is listed as killed in an airplane accident on Okinawa March 9.

First notification was received March 11 from the American Red Cross Field Director in Nagoya, Japan, reporting Col. Lynch as "missing on a flight from Okinawa on March 9th." Through the Chelan County Red Cross office, further communications have been maintained.

For the past year and a half Col. Lynch and his wife, the former Phyllis Francies, with their two small daughters, have been stationed in Nagoya, Japan. A jet pilot with the 49th Fighter Bomber group, he was 38 years old.

Col. Lynch began his military career as a pilot for the Royal Air Force in England, 1941. Upon one occasion his performance was considered so outstanding that he was invited to have tea with the King and Queen of England at Buckingham Palace. While stationed at Malta he won the sweepstakes by shooting down the 1000th Axis plane over that much bombed land.

After serving 25 months with the Royal Air Force, Col. Lynch transferred to the United States Air Force. In 1944 he was stationed at what was then called Moses Lake Air Base (Larson Air Force Base) where he was director of flying and was in charge of training of all young pilots there.

Among those surviving him are his wife Phyllis and daughters Mary Kathleen and Patricia Ann, at the family home in Nagoya.

Mrs. Francies expects to fly from Seattle Monday on a commercial airline for Japan and will return with her daughter and children.
