He was born Feb. 3, 1913 in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Ashford and his family relocated to Caledonia, N.Y., where he graduated from Mumford High School and attended St. Lawrence University. It was in these years that Ashford decided to become an airplane pilot and joined the United States Air Force, Ashford was a decorated hero of World War II after performing distinguished service as one of the famed “Hump Pilots.” These 2,500 air crew members and supporting personnel shuttled troops and supplies over the rugged terrain of China and the Himalaya Mountains with little or no radar contact while avoiding Japanese fighters and bombers in the China-Burma-India Theatre of operation. Ashford was awarded the China war Memorial Medal by the Republic of China in 1976. Ashford also received the Air Medal and a special citation from President Harry S. Truman for the highest valiance, competence, patriotism and courage for Ashford’s World War II piloting during an anti-submarine patrol to secure east coast shipping and military supply lines. While in the Air Force, Ashford’s roommate and lasting friend was the late Barry Goldwater who went on to become U.S. Senator from Arizona and the GOP candidate for president of the United States in 1964. Following his military service, Ashford was a pilot for several companies in the western United States before serving his last 30 plus years as the corporate pilot for the Manitowoc County in Manitowoc. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Elks Club, Eagles Club and several pilots’ associations. In 1953, he married the late Nyna Jean Birch and the couple soon moved from Montana to Manitowoc.
