Wayne was born Sept. 22, 1937, in Sheboygan to George and Norma Laux Koene.
He was a graduate of Kiel High School, Class of '55. Wayne continued his studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he earned a bachelors degree and masters in Agricultural Education and later a masters degree in Education Administration.
While attending UW-Madison, he was active in the Army ROTC and later earned the rank of major in the Army Reserves. Wayne more recently served as commander of the American Legion Post 149 of Sheboygan Falls,
Wayne was an administrator at the Moraine Park Technical College for 17 years. He held the position of farm director for KFIZ and adult education coordinator at the UW-Sheboygan Center in more recent years. Wayne will also be remembered for his contributions in the Kiel Konnection.
Wayne was a member of Ebenezer United Church of Christ, Sheboygan, where he served as deacon. He was also past president of the Fond du Lac and Sheboygan Falls Kiwanis, SCARTA, and Sheboygan Historical Society.
Other memberships include the WALSA, and the EAA. Wayne was associated with two Civil War groups and was a life member of the Kiel FFA. He enjoyed judging forensics at various local high schools and studying genealogy.
On Oct. 19, 1984, Wayne married Helen Kratz in the United Trinity Church in Lomira. In addition to his wife Helen, survivors include his mother, Norma Koene of Sheboygan Falls; his daughter, Noreen Koene of Neenah; his son, David Koene of Madison; four stepchildren, Jeff (Shelley) Bloch, Doug (Linda) Bloch, Greg (Amy) Bloch and Carla Bloch; nine step-grandchildren; cousins and many friends.
His father, George Koene, preceded Wayne in death in 1980. :
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, May 14, at 11 a.m. at Ebenezer United Church of Christ in Sheboygan with the Rev. Roger Mealiff officiating. Burial will take place in the Schwartzwald Cemetery.
