John's middle name was to honor his uncle, his father's brother, Sampson Fendel Sutherlin who died 4 Dec. 1837 in Indiana; a wall fell on him as he was helping to build a church. (as per Edna Wiese)

John's father, John Franklin Sutherlin, in a letter to his brother Owen Sutherlin in Greencastle, Indiana, dated April 9, 1858 from Winchester, Douglas Co., Oregon stated the following:

"John has lately married, her name is Mary Brown. Has his claim [Donation Land Claim] all fenced and a good framed barn, a log house, and with his mother's help, good decent beds to bring his wife into. Has plenty of stock and his grain sowed except for a piece of ground broke to plant in corn and grain a plenty in his barn and as neat a one horse buggy as need be and not much to do but to ride about with his wife in his buggy. If he cannot take pleasure in this life now, he need not ever expect to."

John died from typhoid fever as well as his children, America, Sarah and James.

He shares his headstone with his son, James B. Sutherlin. His daughters America and Sarah lie beside him and his son.

Daughter Lucy Anna survived to adulthood. His widow remarried.

Owen is living with his mother and stepfather, Presley G. Eubanks, in Oakland, Oregon in 1900. He is single and is listed as a "capitalist". Pressley is a farmer. His mother, Polly Brown Sutherlin Eubanks, is shown as having 12 children, 2 living in the 1900 U.S. Census for Oakland Prec., Douglas Co., Oregon. The 2 living Sutherlin children are Lucy Taylor and Owen. Lucy and her children are living very near her mother and her husband, Presley Eubanks. Note: It appears that she had 5 children w/John S. Sutherlin and 7 with Pressley.

In the 1900 census, Fendel & Lucy B. Sutherlin are living nearby.
