Obituary
William Guy Cook
William Guy Cook, 97, of Terre Haute, beloved father of Shanda Baggett Johnson, died March 3, 2011, while vacationing in Fort Walton Beach, Fla. He was the father-in-law of Myron E. Johnson. William was born May 2, 1913, in Gibson, Tenn., to Perry Benton Cook and Amy Ann Foust Cook. He attended schools in Gibson and Hamilton, Miss. He was retired from Allison's Detroit Diesel, a division of General Motors Corporation. He was a 50 year member of Evergreen-Oriental Lodge 500 Free & Accepted Masons, in Indianapolis; Indianapolis Scottish Rite Temple; West Side Chapter 138 Royal Arch Mason, Indianapolis; and Corinthian Chapter 456 Order of Eastern Star, Indianapolis.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping when he was young. He was a member of the Allison Rifle/Pistol Club and was a catcher for his plant's baseball team. Game shows and sports events on television and Sudoku puzzles occupied much of his time in later years. He enjoyed wintering on the beach in Florida, and spending the summer at Raccoon Lake in Park County. He was always happy when friends and family dropped in to see him.
William was a member of Mount Olive United Methodist Church, of Indianapolis. He was a Christian who loved his God and prayed every evening. Shortly before he died he spoke of crossing over and he heard the heavenly voices calling him to Glory.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Valaree E. Bolerjack Cook; his parents; sisters, Lorene Merz and Viola Talbot; brothers, Herbert and James Cook; and an infant grandson, James Thomas Baggett.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law; granddaughter and her family, Sharae Lyn Baggett Henderson, husband Steven and sons, Cory Baggett and Jade Henderson: a sister-in-law, Doris Holloway of Maryville, Tenn., and her family; and several nieces and nephews. His extended family (the Johnson family) who welcomed and embraced him include stepgrandchildren, Tim Johnson (Nancy), Debbi Guenzel (Mark), Joyce Nichols (Robert), and Becky Giltz (Terry); step great-grandchildren, Kristi Nichols Reed (Wes), Nikki Guenzel King (Chris), Michael Nichols (Kristina), Megan Guenzel Ogg (Ryan), Steven Nichols (Amanda), Chris Johnson, Amber Skeel and Anthony Guenzel; and three step great-great-grandchildren, Gabriel and Jason Nichols, and Ava Grace Reed.
A memorial celebration of his life will be at Memorial United Methodist Church, 2701 Poplar St., Terre Haute, on Saturday, June 25, 2011, at 4 p.m. Visitation is 3 p.m. until services Saturday. In lieu of flowers, for those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to Memorial U.M. Church or to the charity of the donor's choice.
