History of Witter, Arkansas 1830-2001 compiled by Joy Anderson Russell

Page 228 says: Drury and Mary are believed to be buried in Captain Smith Cemetery, in the center near the big trees. Alton "Tobe" Reeves told Joy Russell in the early 1990's about the "old Reeves" graves there. They are marked by fieldstones only and Tobe said they were some of the earliest graves in the cemetery and belonged to some of the first Reeves settlers in the Witter area.

Drury came to Madison County about 1835. He was in the 1830 Henderson Co TN, census and is listed on the 1850 Slave Schedule of Madison County, which means that he owned slaves. Drury Reeves, Private, is listed as one of the enlisted men in the War of 1812 in Tennessee. His wife, Mary Elizabeth, received $8:00 per month as a widow's pension.

The below information was sent to me per e-mail to correct any confusion : I had her maiden name as O'Barr but removed it after receiving this e-mail

Hello

Mary O'Barr married Drury's cousin, George Reeves Jr. George was the young brother of Jordan Reeves, Drury's father. The surname of Mary who married Drury is unknown because there isn't a marriage record, will, Bible entry or any other private or public record of her last name. I descend from George Reeves Jr., and I work and research with three descendants of Jordan Reeves. One of them, Carolyn Gray Mahady, is particularly knowledgeable as the result of extensive research. She has made major contributions to The Reeves Project, and she co-authors a blog about the Rives, Reaves, Reeves families.

Mary O'Barr, likely the daughter of Robert O'Barr married George Reeves Jr. after the death of his first wife. She was born in 1775 in SC and she died in 1837 in Crawford County, Arkansas. She is buried in the old Reeves cemetery in Crawford on land that is privately owned.

Many ancestry.com trees have Jordan Reeves marrying a Mary O'Barr, but again, that is more misinformation.

Would you kindly correct the name of Drury's wife to 'Mary'? It will prevent this mistake from being carried forward, copied into trees, etc. Thank you very much for your help.
