Herbert was born in Pike County Mississippi to the late Annie Mae and Nephus Gayden. He lived, laughed and loved to the fullest with his family and friends until his departure. His wings arrived as scheduled December 24, 2011 at 4:30pm. He flew away with a smile.

He was the eldest of twelve and preceded in death by one sibling, Emma Jean. He received his education from Garden Ridge grade school in Pike County Mississippi; unable to attend high school due to share cropping and the 1930's depression. He received Christ as a teenager.

He was drafted during WWII. During the war he served in the army at Omaha beach in France in the battle of D Day. After being honorably discharged he returned home to find his dearly beloved and the apple of his eyes, the most beautiful girl in the world, none other than Selena waiting for his return home. He furthered his education by going back to school on the GI Bill at night.

Herbert and his baby brother left McComb Mississippi in July 1963 by hitching a ride to Oakland, Ca with a friend of the family, put his children through college and lived a happy and productive life. He united with Mt. Zion Baptist Church in the early 60's.

Herbert leaves to celebrate his memories; daughter Alice F. Harrell. (Husband Stan Harrell), the twins Carolyn and Hal Gayden. He has one son who is deceased, Willie B. Gayden, Daughter-in-law Daren Gayden, Three grandsons, four great grand children. Ben Taylor is godson and care provider, five sisters and five brothers, many nieces and nephews, several sister and brother-in-laws, many cousins including Ralph Butler and a host of friends including Brother Kingsbury, Brother Wright, Brother Eric, Sister Lundy and the Mt Zion Church family.
