Born to John Mihal (1881-1957) of Velka Lodina, Slovakia & Anna Kurdelak Mihal (1889-1958) of Slovakia, who married in 1903. They first lived in Hostetter, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, but moved to Indiana about 1917. In 1930, the family was living in Gary, Lake County, Indiana, where John worked as a steel mill laborer.

John, Jr. served in World War II. He was a truck driver.

John married Josephine Rospond (1907-1993). One son, John Frances "Jack" Mihal (1950-2011).
