Gilbert served as a Lieutenant in the Dental Corps, U.S.S. Erie ( PG-50 ), U.S. Navy during World War II. He reported aboard the U.S.S. Erie on June 6, 1942.

He resided in Sparrows Point, Baltimore County, Maryland prior to the war.

U.S.S. Erie ( PG-50 ) was torpedoed by German U-163 off Curacao during the war.

The Erie survived the attack, however, " 7 " members of the crew perished in the attack.

Gilbert was declared " Missing In Action " in this attack.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.

The remains of LT George Owen Kunkle where later recovered and he was first interred and later, at the directions of his wife, his remains were cremated and spread at sea.
