Funeral services for Maitland Wadsworth Newsome, 92, of Arley, were at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30, 2011, at Arley United Methodist Church, Brothers Ron Gilbreath and Lee Witherington officiated, with interment in the church cemetery.

Kilgore Green Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Newsome passed away Tuesday, Dec. 27, at Ridgeview Health Service. She was born Dec. 27, 1919, in Arley to Dessa and J.E. Wadsworth. She was the third of eight children. She was a 1939 graduate of Meek School. Desiring to be teacher, her principal, Mr. Posey, encouraged her family to enroll her at the of University of Montevallo. She worked full time and earned her degree in home economics education, first of her family to graduate high school and college. Traveling home by train and bus from Montevallo was an experience since Arley had neither a bus nor a train.

She and Jack Newsome were wed in 1944 by the local Methodist pastor at Aliceville while Jack was stationed at the Army's prisoner of war camp there. Haleyville High was her first job before returning to her alma mater, Meek. Maitland taught 36 years, leading FHA girls to earn many Alabama State Fair exhibit awards and trained students for a lifetime career. She and her husband, Jack, began dairy farming after his return from World War II. In 1964, they were honored as FHA Farmers of the Year, and were consistently honored as a Master Dairy Farm.

She was a lifelong member of Arley United Methodist Church, serving as teacher, trustee, chair and member the administration board, conference delegate and member of United Methodist Women. She was member of Alpha Chi Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa teacher sorority. A charter member of Arley Woman's Club, she worked tirelessly for Arley to have a library and in 2005 her efforts were finally realized when the Arley Public Library was dedicated. A member of Winston County Retired Educators Association, she also served on the Walker, Winston and Marion County Library Board and Mental Health Board. She received Meek High School "Alumnus of the Year Award." She was a conservative Republican and delighted in attending numerous presidential and gubernatorial inaugurations.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse and Dessa Wadsworth; her husband of 56 years, Jack Newsome; sisters, Inez Wadsworth, Dothene (Calvin) Aaron, Louise (Charlie) McCormic and Inez Wadsworth; brothers, Dorthen Wadsworth and Sherman Wadsworth; and a sister-in-Law, Ruth Wadsworth.

She is survived by a daughter, Diane (Don) Allison; granddaughters, Angie (Shawn) Abercrombie and MaLea (Chris) Ergle; great-grandchildren, Loren and John Mark Abercrombie and Lydia Ergle: a sister, Carolyn (Brent) Harbison; A brother, Ray (Nancy) Wadsworth; A sister-in-law, Ilene Wadsworth; and a multitude of family and friends.

Pallbearers were Richard Densmore, Chuck Goodwin, Devin Guthrie, John Lemsky, Greg Newsome, Wayne Nichols, Allan Harbison and Philip Harbison.

Honorary pallbearers were the men of Arley United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Meek High School Alumni Association Scholarship Fund; Arley United Methodist Church; or the charity of one's choice.

Visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, at Kilgore Green Funeral Home; and from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30, at the church.
