Judge Virgil Pittman, age 95, of Mobile passed away at home surrounded by his family on January 6, 2012.

Predeceased by his first wife, Floy Lasseter Pittman of Mobile; parents, W.O. and Annie Lee Logan Pittman of Enterprise; brother, Oscar Lee Pittman, Geneva, Alabama.

Survived by his wife, Lily Lea Verneuille Pittman; children, Karen (Allen) Pittman Gordy of Columbus, GA, W. Lee (Becky) Pittman of Birmingham, AL, Joe (Jane) Verneuille, of Mobile, AL, Walter (Regina) Verneuille, of Mobile, AL, Lea Verneuille, of Fairhope, AL; grandchildren, Dr. Jason (Jasna) Pittman, of Boston, MA, Jenny (Michael) Pittman Cooney, of Birmingham, AL, Clay (Amanda) Pittman, of Birmingham, AL, PFC, Thomas Logan Pittman, of Honolulu, Hawaii, Allison (Craig) Lowell of Birming-ham, AL, Allison Gordy, of Atlanta, GA, Karen (John) Gordy Dille, of St, Louis, MO, Bert (Caryl) Gordy, Jr. of Big Lake, MN, Shannon (Matt) Verneuille Harkins of Mobile, Ashley (Robert) Verneuille Mitchell of Mobile, Drew Verneuille of Mobile, Davis Verneuille of Mobile; eight great grandchildren.

Born in Enterprise, Alabama March 28, 1916, graduated from Enterprise High School, University of Alabama and University of Alabama Law School in1940. Served as Special Agent Federal Bureau of Investigation from 1941 to 1944, United States Navy Lt. J.G. 1944-1946. Practiced law in Gadsden, Alabama 1946-1952 with Miller & Pittman, Circuit Judge Seventeenth Judicial Circuit State of Alabama 1952-1966, United States District Judge for the Middle and South-ern Districts of Alabama 1966-1971, United States District Judge for the Southern District of Alabama 1966 until his retirement on his 90th birthday on March 28, 2006. Member of First Baptist Church of Mobile, where he taught Sunday school and was a member of the Board of Deacons.

Funeral Service Wednes-day, January 11, 2012 at 12:00 o'clock noon with visitation from 10:30 a.m. until service time at FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH, 806 Government Street, Mobile, Alabama. Private family interment Pine Crest Cemetery, 1939 Dauphin Island Parkway, Mobile, Alabama. Serving as active pall-bearers will be his grandsons, and honorary pallbearers will be the Federal Judiciary past, present and select friends. Donations can be made to the First Baptist Church of Mobile, Cumberland School of Law, Birmingham, Alabama or University of Alabama School of Law Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
