Joel "JR" Richard Roberts

(September 25, 1938 - January 4, 2012)

Joel Richard Roberts, 73

known to many as J.R., died peacefully at Bortz Health Care Facility of Petoskey on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at the age of 73.

Born Sunday, September 25, 1938 in Rochester, Michigan to William Vernon and Helen (Povey) Roberts,Joel grew up in Rochester and was a graduate of Rochester High School, Class of 1957. J.R.'s father owned and operated a hardware store in Rochester, but during summer months the family moved north to Mackinaw City where they operated a cabin rental business where everyone in the family would lend a hand; the summers J.R. And his brothers spent north in Mackinaw were special times, where they learned the value of hard work and the importance of family.

J.R. Proudly served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps, enlisting in October of 1958. He was honorably discharged as a Lance Corporal in October of 1961. It was also a source of great pride that in later years his son Mark would follow his father's example by also enlisting in The Corps.

Following his years of service, J.R. Moved back to Northern Michigan where he met and later married Jane Nowland. The two were married on June 16, 1962 in Petoskey at the United Methodist Church. The couple made their home in Pellston, where they raised their children and became active members of the community. They loved the closeness of Pellston especially the little neighborhood in which the family lived on the east side and where Joel's whistle could often be heard around dinner time calling his kids home.

From the late 1960's through the early 1980's J.R. Was employed as a Foreman for ITT and later worked for both Wolverine Stages and at the Pellston Regional Airport.

J.R. Enjoyed being a part of his children's lives. He served as Pack 2 Cub Master and later Scout Master of Boy Scouts of America Troop 2. Whether it was thawing out two dozen nearly frozen polar bear campers, taking the Order of the Arrow Brotherhood with his son Michael or being named Scenic Trails Council Commissioner of the Year, J.R. Loved Scouting. A true fan was born when he saw his daughter Molly play her first basketball game as a member of the Pellston Hornets and from that point on he was always in the stands rooting for the home team, no matter who was playing.

J.R. Is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Jane and by their children, Michael (Mark) of Tampa, Mark (Angie) of Levering and Molly (Larry) Cassidy of Pellston; he is also survived by his beloved grandchildren, Blake Cassidy and Emma Roberts. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his brothers Billy, John and Jim and by his sister, Shirley.

A funeral service celebrating J.R.'s life has been planned for this Saturday, January 7th at 11 a.m. At the New Hope United Methodist Church in Levering, Rev. David Behling will officiate. Visitation will also be held at the church on Friday evening from 5-7 p.m. Interment will take place in the spring within McKinley Township Cemetery.

Those wishing to honor J.R.'s memory with a charitable contribution are asked to consider New Hope United Methodist Church.

J.R. Leaves his wife and children a lifetime of wonderful memories. Memories of times spent together at places like Mount Rushmore and Wisconsin Dells, around a Boy Scout camp fire or in the stands of the Pellston High School gymnasium. His greatest source of pride above all others was the knowledge that each of his children developed loving and lasting relationships.
