Joseph Kingsley Barry was born November 09, 1818 in Oneida County, New York to John and Eunice (Sweet) Barry and died in June 11, 1899 in Chicago, Illinois, aged 80 years. He entered the ministry at age 21 and preached in Milford and Little Falls, New York and in Erie, Pennsylvania. He married Jane Ann Van Alstyne, daughter of Thomas Butler and Eliza Shepard (Gile) Van Alstyne on October 08, 1839 in New York. This marriage produced three children, Thomas Van Alstyne (1840), Eliza Althea (1844) and Thomas William (1847). The family removed to St. Charles, Kane, Illinois in 1852. Sadly his wife Jane died one year later, December 04, 1853 and is buried at North Cemetery in St. Charles, Illinois
He met Mary Marniva Cone, daughter of John and Lucinda (Rand) Cone and they were married November 29, 1854 in Warren, Illinois. Their marriage produced three children, Kingsley (1855), Kate Leonora (1857) and William Rand (1860). In 1856 the family went to Alabama,with Joseph preaching at Tuscaloosa in that State and afterwards at Aberdeen, Mississippi. In 1860 he returned to Illinois, settling in Wyanet but soon after, removed to Chicago. He was a man of commanding presence and great intellectual power. Strong in his likes and dislikes, he sometimes made enemies, but also friendships that were as enduring as life. He was a member of the Masonic Order. He is buried with his wife Mary at Graceland Cemetery in Chicago, Illinois.
