Roger G. Aarness, 72, of Port Orchard, Wash., made his last crossing Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2011, after dying from complications of Lewy Body Dementia.

Roger was born Oct. 18, 1939, in Rochester, to Clifford and Nettie (Bradish) Aarness. Roger retired as a Staff Chief Engineer from the Washington State Ferries after 33 years of employment. He also served 10 years in the U.S. Navy where he spent the bulk of his service aboard the U.S.S. Essex. Roger served in both the Cuban missile crisis and the Vietnam conflict. He also served aboard the U.S.S. Higbee.

He was preceded in death by his parents and infant brother.

He is survived by his wife, Cheryl of 48 years; daughters, Amy McKnight and Corrine Harris; son, Aaron; grandchildren, Bridgette, Abby and Emily McKnight, Lydia and Callie Harris, Gordon, Anders and Ethan Aarness; brother, James; and sisters, Arlene Theel and Judy (Herman) Theel of Plainview.

Our beloved viking Roger enjoyed many hobbies and his pets. He was an avid hunter, enjoyed target shooting, golfing and playing darts. Roger proudly held membership in the American Legion, VFW, Eagles, NRA, and Varmit Hunters of America. His sense of humor and mischievous smile will be missed by all.

Celebration of Life Service was held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30, 2011, at Rill's Life Tribute Center in Port Orchard, Wash. Interment was at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Rochester.
